How we rate our Machinery

The ratings are arrived at via a combination of factors, mainly the circumstances under which the tool/machine will be used under, by whom, how often and who made the tool/machine. Price and serviceability are also considered. Plus, you will need to check that you have sufficient power supply, especially in terms of amperage, to run larger machines. As a general rule, an induction motor up to 1,500W/1.5kW/2hp will run on a 13Amp fixed domestic supply, 1,500-2,200W/1.5-2.2kW/2-3hp induction motors will need a 16 or 20Amp fixed supply.

Machinery with larger than 2,200W/2.2kW/3hp induction motors should be installed by a competent technician. Machines of 1,100W/1.1kW/1.5hp or above are generally not suitable for use with extension leads. Please check the rating details of your extension lead before using it with any workshop machine or power tool. These ratings do not affect any Statutory Consumer Rights. Please note, the description 'tool' is used to include portable and fixed machines.
