Machinery Classification

There’s a machine just for you...

Every machine is built to a carefully considered standard, with purposeful material selection, precision engineering, and thoughtful design, supported by efficient, reliable motors and components chosen to suit the machine’s intended application. To help you make a confident, informed choice, the classifications below guide you to the machine best matched to your work, environment, and expected level of use.

To ensure you select the most suitable machine, our range is clearly classified according to intended application and frequency of use.

Occasional use:

These machines are designed for light, occasional use. They typically feature lower power ratings and smaller tool capacities, with a lighter build specification compared to professional models. These machines are ideal for individuals carrying out occasional DIY projects at home, in a garage, shed or small workshop.

They are not intended for continuous or high operation and must be maintained and serviced in line with our schedule, otherwise guarantee may be void.

Regular use:

These machines are designed for users who require equipment for more regular, but not continuous, operation. They typically offer a slightly higher power output, greater tool capacity, and a more robust construction than those of lower grade models. These machines are well-suited to either dedicated hobbyists who are committed to their craft using the machine for personal projects, or in small professional workshops for lighter, less frequent tasks in the workshop. They provide a balance between performance, durability, and cost without being intended for full scale professional or continuous use.

They must be maintained and serviced in line with our schedule, otherwise guarantee may be void.

Frequent use:

These machines are designed for frequent and extended use in professional environments, offering the performance and durability required for trade and workshop applications. They typically feature high power output, robust construction, and enhanced functionality compared to regular use models. These machines are well-suited to skilled tradespeople and workshops where equipment is used frequently / daily, though not necessarily for continuous, all-day operation as these are not industrial grade machines.

They must be maintained and serviced in line with our schedule, otherwise guarantee may be void.

How we rate our machinery

The ratings are primarily based on how frequently and for how long the machine is expected to be used, with consideration also given to the type of work, the user, and the manufacturer. Price and serviceability are also considered. Plus, you will need to check that you have sufficient power supply, especially in terms of amperage, to run larger machines. As a general rule, an induction motor up to 1,500W/1.5kW/2hp will run on a 13Amp fixed domestic supply, 1,500-2,200W/1.5-2.2kW/2-3hp induction motors will need a 16 or 20Amp fixed supply.

Machinery with larger than 2,200W/2.2kW/3hp induction motors should be installed by a competent technician. Machines of 1,100W/1.1kW/1.5hp or above are generally not suitable for use with extension leads. Please check the rating details of your extension lead before using it with any workshop machine or power tool. These ratings do not affect any Statutory Consumer Rights. Please note, the description 'tool' is used to include portable and fixed machines.
