Axminster No. 4 Bedrock Smoothing Plane is a versatile bench plane designed for fine finishing, smoothing and general-purpose woodworking tasks. Widely regarded as the most useful and commonly used bench plane size, the No. 4 is ideal for refining surfaces after initial stock removal, producing clean finishes ready for assembly or final sanding. Equally suited to furniture making, cabinetmaking and general workshop use, it offers the control, balance and accuracy required for high-quality results.
Built around a robust ductile iron body, the No. 4 Bedrock features the renowned Bedrock-style frog design, providing maximum support and stability to the cutting iron. This full-contact frog arrangement helps minimise blade chatter and vibration, resulting in cleaner cuts and an improved surface finish. The adjustable frog allows the mouth opening to be widened or narrowed without removing the blade assembly, making fine adjustments quicker, easier and more precise. Additional features include a solid brass depth adjustment nut, traditional disc-style lateral blade adjustment and a comfortable hardwood handle for confident control during extended use.
The plane has a flat, precision-ground sole measuring 240mm long and is fitted with a 50mm (2") wide high carbon steel blade. The blade is cryogenically treated for excellent edge retention and supplied with a 25° bevel, requiring only final honing before use. The substantial weight of the plane helps it glide smoothly across timber, maintaining momentum through difficult grain while contributing to a flatter, more consistent finish. Designed to require minimal initial preparation or fettling before your first thin shaving.
Axminster woodworking tools are designed to deliver dependable performance, lasting quality and excellent value for both hobbyists and professional craftspeople. Combining proven traditional designs with reliable manufacturing, they offer practical solutions for everyday woodworking tasks.
A true workshop essential, the Axminster No. 4 Bedrock Smoothing Plane is ideal for furniture makers, cabinetmakers, joiners, restorers and enthusiastic woodworkers looking for a high-performance finishing plane. Perfect for smoothing surfaces, refining joinery and general bench work, it offers the precision and adjustability needed to achieve consistently high-quality results with minimal setup required before first use.
