The AP430DS is very well made, a solid construction with attention to detail down to the smallest component. It is designed for finishing panels or square timbers and can take a panel up to 430mm wide or timber up to 100mm high.
Powered by a 750W induction motor, with a separate 90W variable speed conveyor motor offering plenty of control over the finish. The conveyor is made from soft, high grip rubber which will not mark the work. A crank handle controls the height of the conveyor, a scale gives an indication of its setting.
The sanding drum takes 76mm wide abrasive strips. Quick release clips secure the abrasive, with one being spring-loaded. Dust extraction is very important, a single dust port effectively removes the waste when connected to a suitable extractor.
A compact machine supplied with a sturdy stand, it will not take up much space and will complement many workshops.
Machine supplied with three abrasive loadings (80 grit, 150 grit and 240 grit).
N.B. Drum sanders are used as part of the finishing process, they are not intended to be used as a planer/thicknesser or for significant stock removal. A drum sander does not replace a planer/thicknesser and vice versa. Drum sanders are intended to be used with already planed and thicknessed material. Overall a planer/thicknesser is meant to dimension timber, the drum sander to finish it.
Key Features
Compact, single drum sander for finishing all timbers
Cast iron table with rubber conveyor belt, feeds work evenly
Variable speed feed system for varying finishes
Machine supplied with three abrasive loadings (80, 150 and 240 grit)

Solid but let down big time on quality assuranceBE WARNED:This machine is solid, heavy and promises much. However, as soon as I started using this machine there was an obvious problem. As others have indicated there was what seemed to be a random binding during sanding. Axminster were quick to send out an engineer within a week of me reporting a problem. It turns out that the conveyor belt has a quality issue i.e. there was a 0.5mm high spot in the thickness of the belt. Hence, when putting through stock it will bind on the high spot.
I must say that Axminster went above and beyond to resolve the issue and they tried out several machines and new belts from service stock but all of them had similar issues. In the end they sent a full refund when they couldn't resolve the issue to the standard I needed.
However, my biggest concern is that the quality of the belt needs to be resolved and I cannot understand how this ever passed quality control when you consider the maximum depth you should be sanding is 0.1mm.
Axminster should stop selling this machine until that issue is resolved as it is not fit for purpose.

I dont recommend itNice and solid built machine but I couldn't get consistent results from it, 1 minute its taking half a mm then it wants to take 3 and bogs down.
The manual is showing different specs to what Axminster show on the website so even if it did work, it wouldn't have suited my needs as you can't sand under 3mm. Returned same day it arrived with help from the team in the Axminster branch.
If you have the time you might get it working well but for the price I expected much, much better.

A grating experienceHad this product since June 2021 and it has caused a few headaches in trying use it optimally. The fan belt to the drum kept slipping and was awkward in trying to get the tension tight. The placing of the sandpaper onto the drum is a real pain, the clips to keep the whole stretch under tension requires very small hands to operate properly and the fixed design of the drum caused numerous grumbles from my staff. The internal wiring was loose (in the emergency stop box) and had to field strip the lot to find the fault. Because of the poor driving belt tension, could only run the machine very slowly and use extremely small increments in height, otherwise the whole thing would horribly squeal. We've been living with the idiosyncrasies and have found some settings that allow proper drum sanding use. Though there is an issue with variability in the height of a sanded plank (+/- 0.5mm) which I thought would be better, but perhaps due to inadequate tension of the sandpaper. In many ways I wished I had saved the money to invest in a more advanced model, but at present it is capable of drum sanding and when it works, it can save a lot of headaches trying to do finish pieces with a belt sander. Hopefully future versions of this model will have a bit more thought to deal with the above issues.

Incredible drum sanderI have used Drum sanders for the last few years for fine box making. I replaced my Jet sander with this Axminster one in October. It’s an incredible improvement very quiet, accurate to 0.1mm and even parallel depth across the drum. Couldn’t be more delighted with this product.

Reads good but a horrible machine.Had this just over a year now and its got to be my worst purchase ever.
Spent an eternity adjusting and getting setup, many many times.
It never works as advertised.
A typical example would be sanding an end grain cutting board.
Dial it in, send board through set to not touch, turn dial a tiny bit with each pass till it just sands. This is where the fun begins. For next pass turn dial a tiny amount and send through, sometimes it contacts sometimes it doesnt, board previously flattened on planer/thicknesser. A common thing next is I make 5 tiny adjustments and 5 passes with no contact at all. On the sixth its as if all the previous increments come at once, board gets jammed and belts start to burn, I get a big deep furrow.
Now I have adjusted and checked everything to no avail and cannot trust this machine not to cause damage.
Spoke at length to Axminster tech support, although pleasant enough they could offer no explanation or remedy.
I would absolutely advise anyone considering this machine to look elsewhere, its just not capable, its fine with thin strips of material but anything larger is going to get damaged.
So I’m left with an £1800 machine that I refuse to use as it will damage my items.
The above happens every single time I have attempted to use this the sander.

Could the sander be mounted on a homemade base with lockable castors? I have limited space and would require to roll the sander into a corner when not in use. Also, what are the dimensions ( LxWxH) of the sander without the base?
Asked by: Shedman
Hello
The sander is 757mm (L) x 304mm (W).
If you were going to use a mobile base you would need the castors to not directly under the weight of the machine but have them offset to the sides. This will prevent the castor from snapping.

Could this, or any other versions of these you sell be used to deburr laser cut metals?
Asked by: Anonymous
Hello
Our Sanders are not suitable for sanding metal as they are too aggressive.
We stock two linishers that would be suitable but these are belt linishers instead of drum linishers.
