Everything you need to keep the ultimate edge on your tools

With these optional accessories, this machine becomes a truly exceptional sharpening and honing system.
Many of the Tormek jigs can also be utilised.

Compound Jig

The basis of most options for the Ultimate Edge is the Compound Jig and is included with your Axminster Trade Ultimate Edge machine. This jig has the familiar round bar in ground silver steel to allow many of the Tormek jigs to be mounted. A clever system of sliding the bar in two directions in one operation is employed, locked with just a twist of a handle.

Universal Sharpening Table

The table locks securely onto the round bar of the Compound Jig forming a stable platform. Anodised in black, there is a quadrant of angles laser-marked into the surface for easy reference. The Sharpening Table is ideal for freehand lathe tool sharpening and general linishing. The supplied mitre guide also helps to maintain the position of the grind. Size 130 x 75mm.

Honing Guide

Perfect for plane blades and joinery chisels, it fits onto the round bar of the Compound Jig. The blade is clamped tightly allowing both primary and secondary bevels to be achieved. It is manufactured entirely from stainless steel and has a simple set screw to control the width. The LH jaw is reversible and has twin jaws. One is curved for chisels that do not have perfectly parallel sides (such as Japanese styles) can be clamped, the other jaw is completely parallel. The jaws are of a dovetail shape, allowing the chisel to be securely clamped against the body. The jaws accommodate chisels from 6-66mm in width, so even a No. 8 plane blade will fit.

'Twist n Fix' Arbor

The 'Twist n Fix' arbor does just that, one twist and it's fixed in place on the carrier. The unique connection allows mops and honing wheels to be used in either forward or in reverse. Polishing mops and felt wheels should always be used in order, working from a coarse to a fine compound. Separate arbors are available so each mop or wheel can be left attached for fast-changing.

Micro Bevel Guide

Having ground the primary bevel on any tool the secondary bevel or micro bevel actually does the majority of the work. It is exactly what it says: it is a micro bevel which can be increased with ease each time the tool becomes dull.

Honing Belt

Designed to use specifically with the Ultimate Edge. It is made from two layers of supple leather, 3.5mm thick, and double-sided. This means that two grades of honing or polishing pastes can be used, the belt being flipped over to use the alternative side. The joints are butted, so there should be no high spots to disturb the process. Always use the belt in a clockwise direction, with the belt travelling away from the blade tip.

The Axminster Trade Ultimate Edge is a new way of sharpening, linishing and polishing. Now, none of us take up sharpening as a hobby, but it’s a necessity to get the best out of our tools; woodwork without a keen edge simply ends up in tears. With this fixed speed version, we’ve torn up the rule book and changed the direction of sharpening. When honing or stropping a fine edge, convention has always been away from the strop - I mean which way does the barber strop his razor…? Exactly, away from. Other belt sharpening machines will have the belt only travelling into the blade. Running the belt in reverse, away from the blade, gives you greater control, generating less heat and, ultimately, giving you a better (barber quality) edge.

The Compound Jig comes with this machine.

If you’re a woodworker who struggles to get the best edge on your tools, you will love the Ultimate Edge. With the right accessories, you cannot fail to get a fast, repeatable, quality edge every time. If you’re a skilled sharpener, the Ultimate Edge is also for you. Utilising the Universal Sharpening Table, allows you to freehand sharpen all your edge tools.

If woodturning is your craft, the Ultimate Edge takes care of your tools brilliantly. Once the Compound Jig is fitted to the machine it allows many of the outstanding Tormek jigs to be used, producing a honed edge on many tools, quickly and easily.

Carvers have not been forgotten either. With many carving tools being quite delicate, you don’t want to be too aggressive with them. This is where the unique Twist n Fix comes into its own. Once fitted to the Ultimate Edge, a wide range of mops and felt wheels can be fitted to bring your carving tools back to life.

We’ve also found the Ultimate Edge to be fantastic at bringing old tools back to life. If you have some of your grandad’s old tools in a box at the back of the shed, the Ultimate Edge combines fast rust removal with effortless polishing and incredible sharpening and honing capabilities. Remember, many of these old tools are made from the best steels available.

The possibilities of the Ultimate Edge are endless. This machine has a 375W induction motor, which has high torque and is quiet running. The 50mm wide belts can be easily changed with an auto tension lock and belt tracking is also quick and easy to adjust. The belt platter is fully adjustable to the belt; an optional graphite slip plate is provided. There is a simple table provided as standard. The base is 5mm plate steel and is provided with adjustable feet for bench mounting.
