There is probably no better design for setting out mortices and tenons. This combination mortice and marking gauge has a laminated bamboo stock and stem, giving the feel of traditional wood, whilst adding a nice heft to the tool. The gauge features a screw adjusted brass slider and inlaid brass wear strips on the stock. The thumbscrew provides very fine control over the mortice width setting. Once the distance between the marking pins is set, any other adjustments to the gauge will not disturb the setting. A single marking pin on the back of the stem allows you to use the tool as a standard marking gauge.
The use of laminated bamboo for the stock and stem is an important step forward in the manufacture of this traditional tool. Made from compressed and glued layers of individual sections, laminated bamboo is extremely durable and stable. As an alternative to rosewood and other increasingly scarce tropical timbers, laminated bamboo is perfect. Bamboo stems mature at 4 to 5 years old.
