What sets this block plane apart from the rest?

Skeletonised body and rear tote

By redesigning the body of the plane, it allows it to fit hands of all sizes. The solid, stainless steel investment cast rear tote fits palms perfectly.

Unique blade tensioning

The blade tension is achieved by a four-linkage mechanism. Moving the cap downwards until it snaps tightens the blade. These components are CNC machined from solid aluminium and anodised creating a beautiful finish that is almost as hard as diamond.

The blade

John Economaki's pioneering plane design allows for an iron with dual edges. One is ground primarily for end grain (42° attack angle) and the other for general purpose use (47° degree attack angle).

Blade adjustment

The blade is adjusted with a modified Norris mechanism allowing for extremely fine blade advancement. The backlash of the lead is minimised by adjusting the two screw knobs located at the top of the brass lead screw pivot.

Thickness plane

By adding the supplied depth skids allows you to turn your block plane into a mini thickness planer. A totally unique feature to the Bridge City HP-9v2 Dual Angle Block Plane.

Dual face fence

The HP-9v2 block plane also features a guide fence, which allows you to plane square edges.

What sets this block plane apart from the rest? Just about everything, each aspect of block plane design re-assessed, re-invented and re-designed. Aesthetically pleasing, this beautiful example of tool making is a delightful combination of superbly engineered form and function. It is an heirloom in every sense of the word.

To begin, it is two tools in one, both a standard and a low angle block plane. The blade sits bevel-up with a bed angle of 12°. The blade is 4.76mm thick with two edges, one at each end. A 47° bevel for general work and a 42° bevel for taking a fine shaving off end grain. The sharp edge of the blade, not in use sits in an aluminium channel for protection. Gone is the traditional steel bar across the body to help clamp the blade. In its place, a quick action blade clamp, with a 4-linkage mechanism that snaps into place. The 304 stainless-steel rear tote fits palms perfectly, making it a most comfortable plane to use.

Depth of cut adjustment is via a modified Norris mechanism allowing for extremely fine blade advancement. One full revolution of the lead screw changes the depth of cut by a mere 0.1mm. In common with the Norris design, moving the lead screw knob left or right controls lateral blade alignment. The 416 annealed stainless-steel sole features an adjustable throat. The sides and blade clamping mechanism are precision CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminium, anodised to create a hardwearing, long lasting finish.
Adding to the HP-9v2 functionality is the unique inclusion of the depth skids.

Fitted on each side of the body they turn the HP-9v2 into a 50.8mm wide thicknesser. The depth skids allow accurate dimensioning of stock up to 32mm thick to within a tolerance of 0.05mm. The HP-9v2 Dual Angle Block Plane is the only block plane available today with this capability. Some of the more obvious uses for this functionality are jewellery boxes, inlay, shoji screen components and any project requiring precisely dimensioned thin material.

The HP-9v2 also features a double-sided guide fence. Attaching the two fence posts and the guide fence ensures perfectly square edges or precise 45° chamfers.

The HP-9v2 comes complete with double-edged blade, depth skids, and fence
Size LxWxH: 164 x 52 x 64mm.
