Watch Colwin in this Woodworking Wisdom demo, or follow our step-by-step guide below, to build your own workshop storage unit for all your sanding bits and bobs.

Prep your timber

For this project you need:

We've used some birch offcuts. 1,000 high x 700mm wide x 140mm deep

  • 2 x long side panels
  • 4 x short panels - Top,  2 middle and bottom
  • 3 x centre (doubled trenched to 5mm) upright panels
  • 16 x 100mm x 100mm shelf inserts (depending on the size you make you may need more or less)

After cutting your ply board to the correct size for your needs, cut four widths of 100mm and trim to length, if required, to form the panels needed.

Cut your trenches

We have used the table saw to trench cut to allow the dividing sections to sit into, but a router could be used to make these cuts. Note that the riving knife and crown guard are still fitted and operating correctly. These are cut to 10mm deep.

As well as the outside pieces, there are four central pieces. These form the main uprights, which have also been trenched, this time on each side to 5mm deep. When assembled, small 100mmx100mm shelves will slot into these trenches.

Drill some clearance holes on the inside of the outside panels ready for screwing together. Turn the panel over and add countersunk holes ready for assembly.

Final assembly

For the assembly piece together all the parts and screw them together.

Measure, mark and cut your backing board. We have used a piece of chipboard rescued from an old box pallet, however, as it is just a backing board, any sheet material will work.

Drill, countersink and screw the backing board to the main structure.

Here the sanding storage station ready to fit to the wall.
