As their name implies these tools are mainly used for parting finished work from the waste. They do, however, have other uses like cutting deep grooves, or, with calipers, cutting a series of grooves to a specific diameter as when making tenons. Beading tools, generally made of square bar, are the ideal tool for flicking out beads. If you have any trouble making a bead with a skew chisel don't bother persevering, just pick up a beading tool. Beading tools can also be used for parting although being broader will waste more wood.
