Hi Collin, my husband has watched you from the beginning on my Facebook, as he does not do social media. I asked him if he could make me a turned square cornered Chinese/Japanese pergola box. He is quietly going through a small forest of wood as he keeps on losing the corners or the flat edges, in the interest of our marriage can you please help and demonstrate making one. HI Colwin I have watched while you and your whole family have been involved, while you make and explain excellently how to make different things using a lathe. Last year for my 70th birthday my family bought me an ac240wl, I have never turned before. But have always made things out of wood, some good and some not so good. After tidying my garage I got round to using the lathe and have made various bits as shown by you. A goblet, an acorn, a tiny bowl a couple of nonmatching tee light candle holders. All out of plain wood basically deal. I did make a pear out of a pear tree wood which was so wet that I got sprayed with sap, and my tools became gummed up.
What I would like to know is when making a bowl, I would like to make one for my daughter. Why is it recommended that the grain of the wood should be horizontal ie going across the lathe bed, and not running parallel to the lathe bed? Could you turn it either way, what is the reasoning behind it?
Is it to do with the finish or the tear out that happens. I have bought an Evolution sk100 starter kit and my wife has just bought me the powered respirator, as my next birthday is almost upon us!

I am looking to purchase my first woodturning lathe and I cannot decide between the AC355WL or the AT350WL. Since this will be my first lathe would it be prudent to purchase the AC355WL, which will leave me with more money to purchase tools, chuck, sharpening equipment etc.
Also what bench grinder / tool sharpening jig would you recommend for start-up,
My initial thoughts are to buy the AC355WL and maybe invest more with respect to the tool sharpening side of things
Any advice would be welcome
