Made in Axminster

Designed, developed and manufactured entirely in our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Axminster. This gives us complete control in ensuring the chucks we produce are supreme in terms of quality, accuracy and longevity.

Stainless steel & super precision as standard

We are mindful that chucks can corrode so stainless steel is the perfect choice of materials for the chuck. The Discovery GK100 chuck is machined to tolerance for a perfect fit of both jaws and the lathe mandrel.

Interchangeable backplate

With versatility in mind, the stainless steel, interchangeable backplate allows you to keep your chuck body and swap your backplate should you wish to upgrade your lathe and need a different thread size.

Reverse locking is available on the M33 x 3.5mm backplate. This unique, universal thread combines the standard M33 x 3.5mm thread, allows users to add the ASR Locking Ring, as well as grub screws to turn in reverse, all in one thread. It is suitable for lathes with a M33 x 3.5mm Euro standard ASR spindle.

Geared chuck key

Hardened pinions ensure the chuck is always accessible, from any angle, to tighten with the key. The key has special grips to avoid slippage and has a warm tactile feel. It is always good practice to tighten all pinions when securing a large piece of work on the lathe.

Finely machined SafetyJaw

Manufactured in our own machine shop in Axminster, these long accessory mounting jaws are unrivalled for quality and precision. We like to call them SafetyJaws because a unique feature of these jaws is that if extended beyond the body of the chuck, the edges have been modified with a slight radius to minimise the chance of injury should hands get too close to the rotating chuck during use. Added safety features also help to ensure the jaws are correctly mounted safely to the chuck.

History

Back in 1984 we produced our very first woodturner's chuck having thought long and hard about what would be an ideal chuck for a woodturning lathe. As engineers, we automatically preferred a scroll chuck and as three jaws were totally out of the question for woodturners (cutting triangular stock is just not that easy), the four jaw chuck system was born.

It wasn't long before we explored all manner of different accessories for the chuck as engineering style jaws were a little limited if not dangerous. We devised a style of mounting four quadrants of a profiled disc that we called jaws, these jaws are still to this day compatible with all the chucks we have made. It is important to us to ensure that the accessories you purchased yesterday will still work with the chucks we make and sell today.

Something we never anticipated was that our chucks would be copied so much and that the market would be so large. Our design was based around interchangeable sets of jaws where the accessory jaws were interchangeable from set to set, whereas other makers relied upon just the one set of jaws, changing eight screws every time you change the profiled quadrants.

The Axminster Woodturning Discovery GK100 Chuck is the perfect introduction for anyone looking to start woodturning. The GK100 Discovery chuck is ideal for a variety of lathe models but ideally more suited medium sized lathes. Supplied as the chuck only body with interchangeable backplate.

The GK100 chucks are all precision engineered and made entirely in Axminster, UK, to ensure they deliver CNC accurate results. The GK100 chuck features a geared key, stainless-steel body and interchangeable backplate for effective corrosion resistance. These chucks won’t rust, either from condensation in a cold workshop or the sap from green wood. Stainless steel body is machined to exact tolerances for a perfect fit of both jaws and lathe spindle.

The interchangeable backplate allows you to keep your chuck body when upgrading your lathe, saving you time and money; simply choose the suitable backplate for your new lathe thread and attach to the chuck body. Upon first purchase of your chuck, choose the correct thread for your lathe.

The GK100 chuck features our latest SafetyJaw accessory mounting jaws. Pair the chuck with our great range of stainless steel jaws to suit your project needs.

Available in sizes 1” x 8 tpi, 1.1/4” x 8 tpi, 3/4” x 16 tpi and M33 x 3.5mm. The M33 x 3.5mm thread is a universal thread, that combines the standard M33 x 3.5mm thread, allows you to add an ASR Locking Ring as well as grub screws to turn in reverse, all in one thread. Suitable for lathes with a M33 x 3.5mm Euro standard ASR spindle and requires the 109370 ASR Locking Ring for the chuck to be run in reverse.

If you're looking to take up or enhance your woodturning, then this is the perfect choice to explore this captivating and creative hobby.

All made entirely in our manufacturing facility, in Axminster, UK using CNC technology for accurate results.

To ensure the chuck is assembled safely, secure the chuck front to the chuck backplate (threaded insert) using the 4 x M6 x 25mm screws and ensure they are tightened to 12NM (Newton-Metres). Please ensure the 2 x M5 Grub Screws are tightened to 2NM.
