Just the word Skew chisel can make some people tremble with fear! But presented in the right way the Skew can become one of the most used and versatile tools in your workshop. The course is designed to give you the know-how on how to keep your Skews looking and performing at their best, as well as the understanding of how to use them effectively.
The day begins with a welcome talk, including a hot drink, health and safety brief and a breakdown and review of the equipment you will be using. You will start your day practicing how to make the right type of shaving before moving onto creating a Christmas tree. Your main project will be a two piece candlestick of your own design.
Your tutor will take you through the different types of Skew chisels available, from standard to tapered, oval to round and rolled edge to straight. Creating intentional catches will help you understand how the tool works and allow you to quickly build up your understanding of Skews. You will also be guided on how to use different parts of the Skew to make a variation of cuts and effects, such as: planing, beading and flaring.
We encourage you to bring your own Skews as sharpening will be a large part of the day and it would be a missed opportunity to go away without a razor sharp edge on your own tools.
The minimum age is 14 years old and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course and must not be left unattended during class hours. If you would like to read our terms and conditions click here.
I will certainly book another course with Axminster
I was recommended to attend this course as I had no experience for 50 years of woodturning. I spent two days with an exceptional firm with exceptional staff and cannot recommend them highly enough. The administration was perfect, the tutor was polite, knowledgeable, approachable and friendly and I have to say that the visit was money well spent. I will certainly book another course with Axminster. If all businesses were run this way with the same type of staff the country would be booming.David R, Beginners Woodturning (2 day)
My only criticism - it was all over too soon!
What a superb couple of days spent in the company of Nick Agar whilst being introduced to the field of woodturning texturing an colouring. Expert demonstration and explanation of techniques and tool use throughout with plenty of time for questions and answers and one to one guidance. The course is set at intermediate level but Nick tempered his instruction to meet the knowledge and experience of each student and made it such a memorable experience. Thanks Nick. Thanks also go to Colwin and Ben for the work they put in behind the scenes (and of course for sorting out the all important elevenses and lunch). My only criticism - it was all over too soon!Alan B, Using Colour & Texture with Nick Agar
