Achieving a sharp edge is a process of first removing metal to form a bevel and then polishing the bevel and back, which form the edge. A progression of finer stones and abrasives help approach a mirror finish. Stropping is the final operation in the sharpening process, where the edge goes from sharp to scary-sharp.

Stropping produces a true razor sharp edge on your plane blades, chisels, carving tools, knives (or cut-throat razor). The Pro Strop kit comprises a handled, wooden holder and two leather faced plattens. The plattens clip into the holder. Rare-earth magnets at each end hold the platten in place. When stropping there is no need to apply heavy pressure, a light touch works best. From time to time, reverse the platen in the holder to even wear. One platten has a napped leather surface for initial stropping. The second platen, for final finishing, is smooth Havana leather. Use your preferred paste or compound on the napped leather and leave the smooth leather uncharged.
