These diamond coated sheets come from a Japanese manufacturer specialising in diamond-coated products. They have a worldwide reputation for quality and durability.
Each sheet is 210 x 75 x 1mm thick steel, with one side coated in evenly distributed minute clusters of precisely graded monocrystalline diamonds. The diamonds are electro-bonded in nickel plating onto the steel sheet. The cluster arrangement ensures maximum diamond contact when sharpening, whilst still leaving room for waste particles to escape, avoiding clogging. Monocrystalline diamonds are far more effective and durable than the polycrystalline diamonds used on cheaper products.
The sheet has a peel-off self-adhesive backing for attaching it to the Atoma aluminium lapping plate. Alternatively, you could stick it onto a sheet of plate glass, granite surface plate or any other flat surface as part of your sharpening setup. Attach it to the Atoma lapping plate and you have a guaranteed flat surface for sharpening or flatting the backs of blades. In the case of the coarse 140g sheet, you also have an awesome tool for rapid flattening of your Japanese water stones.
As with all diamond stones, there is an initial aggressive bite, which mellows slightly after a few uses. Always use a lubricant (lapping fluid or water with HonRite Gold added is perfect). Sharpen with light pressure and your diamond plate will be highly effective for many years. Sheet size is 210mm long x 75mm wide.
