Decades In Development
It’s been nearly 40 years since we first designed and developed our woodturning chuck and over those years we’re proud to have become experts in the world of woodturning.
Our Axminster Woodturning Evolution Chuck Systems are a true example of our consistent efforts to ensure we continually develop and produce innovative tools for the woodturner. Designed, developed and manufactured with pride in Axminster, UK, the chuck systems are devised to maximise work holding on the lathe. They have been cleverly thought out and are now used by professional turners worldwide.
The Axminster Woodturning Evolution SK100 Chuck is the latest to join the range and is, in our view, our best chuck yet. Super slim, incredibly accurate and compatible with all of our previous accessory and dovetail jaws, it’s the perfect way to celebrate our woodturning heritage.

Made in Axminster
Designed, developed and manufactured entirely in our state of the art manufacturing facility in Axminster. This gives us complete control in ensuring the chucks we produce are supreme in terms of quality, accuracy and longevity.
Super Precision As Standard
The standard Evolution SK100 chuck is 50mm deep and is designed to sit as close to the headstock bearings as the mandrel will allow. This minimises vibration and gives a much smoother turn, allowing for faster and cleaner cuts. Not only is this extremely important when turning large hollow forms, it’s also good engineering practice and does not overload or test the bearings in any way.
Reverse locking is available on the M33 x 3.5mm chuck. This is achieved with unique yet simple facial locking screws which can be dedicated to the lathe to ensure that the lathe spindle register is not damaged in any way.
C dovetail jaws
One of our most versatile and popular jaw sets, these are especially useful for small bowls and end grain work such as boxes and goblets as well as bowl turning.
Faceplate ring
No need for a separate faceplate. Simply screw the ring to the chosen blank with woodscrews and expand the Dovetail Jaws into the recess in the centre of the ring.
Screw chuck
Particularly useful for the initial mounting of bowl blanks whilst the outer form and the dovetail base are being shaped.
Square Key
Allows for a more positive engagement with the scroll and easy operation by giving the user extra torque.
SafetyJawâ’¸ Accessory Mounting Jaws
Our SafetyJawâ’¸ Accessory Mounting Jaws are unrivalled for quality and precision. Known as SafetyJawsâ’¸ thanks to a unique feature whereby the edges of the jaws have been modified with a slight radius to minimise the chance of injury should hands get too close to the rotating chuck during use. Added safety features also ensure that the jaws are correctly and safely attached to the chuck.
Manufactured to last
Due to moisture in wood and in workshops, over time standard chucks can corrode. That’s why the Evolution SK100 body is manufactured entirely from Stainless Steel which prevents the chuck from rusting.

History
Back in 1984 we produced our very first woodturner's chuck having thought long and hard about what would be an ideal chuck for a woodturning lathe. As engineers, we automatically preferred a scroll chuck and as three jaws were totally out of the question for woodturners (cutting triangular stock is just not that easy), the four jaw chuck system was born.
It wasn't long before we explored all manner of different accessories for the chuck as engineering style jaws were a little limited if not dangerous. We devised a style of mounting four quadrants of a profiled disc that we called jaws, these jaws are still to this day compatible with all the chucks we have made. It is important to us to ensure that the accessories you purchased yesterday will still work with the chucks we make and sell today.
Something we never anticipated was that our chucks would be copied so much and that the market would be so large. Our design was based around interchangeable sets of jaws where the accessory jaws were interchangeable from set to set, whereas other makers relied upon just the one set of jaws, changing eight screws every time you change the profiled quadrants.

Taking the best features of our Axminster chuck designs over the past 35 years, we have, in our view, produced our best woodturning chuck ever.
The Evolution SK100 chuck is designed to maximise work holding options. It is a chuck to enhance your woodturning, making it easier, accurate and more enjoyable.
The Evolution SK100 features a super-slim 100mm diameter CNC machined, stainless steel body incorporating our SafetyJaw© accessory mounting jaws. The Evolution SK100 is fully compatible with all previous accessory jaws and dovetail jaws.
These chucks won’t rust, either from condensation in a cold workshop or the sap from green wood. Stainless steel body is machined to exact tolerances for a perfect fit of both jaws and lathe spindle. The scroll register and thread are cut in one operation, which ensures no errors arise in concentricity. The jaws are machined to within 2 microns, giving an accuracy worthy of super precision status. Three hardened pinions ensure the chuck is always accessible, from any angle, to tighten with the key. The key has a square end for a positive location in the pinion and easy operation.
All you need to do is choose the chuck threaded to suit your lathe.
All of the components are CNC machined in our workshop in Axminster giving us total control so that the chucks we produce are supreme in terms of longevity and quality. Made entirely in Axminster, England.
Note: 108806 - M33x3.5mm (with Euro ASR groove) Chuck is only suitable for use on lathes with an M33x3.5 EURO standard (ASR) spindle and requires the 109370 ASR Locking Ring in order for the chuck to be run in reverse.
