Here at Axminster Tools, we care about providing the best equipment for woodworking, regardless of whether you're a beginner or seasoned woodworker. This is why all our machinery goes through an extensive development and testing process. We research, design, test and develop all our machines to ensure your tools stand the test of time and are fit for purpose. In this blog, we discuss our machinery process. This will help you understand how your product goes from initial concept, to the on the shelves and into your workshop.

Our machinery process...

  1. Before introducing a new product to our range, our product managers carry out extensive research into the current market landscape. This includes analysing existing products, identifying gaps both in the wider market and within our own offering, and reviewing suppliers’ ranges.
  2. We then order samples of the machines we are interested in from our suppliers in the far east. In some cases, this involves multiple versions of the same product. This allows us to thoroughly assess quality, performance, and suitability for purpose.
  3. Once the samples arrive, our product and servicing teams unbox, assemble, and rigorously test them.
  4. Early in the evaluation process, we determine whether a model is worth pursuing. Where multiple versions or sizes are reviewed, some may meet our expectations while others may fall short. We then identify any required improvements. These can range from minor adjustments, such as branding or labelling, to more significant design changes. Examples include alterations to base size, motor placement, and material selection.
  5. We document, photograph, and share all proposed amendments with the manufacturer. Depending on the scope of the changes, we may request revised samples. Or we proceed to the next stage, where we develop product visuals.
  6. Once we complete all refinements and are confident in the final product, we move forward and place an order.

Factory visits and tool fairs

In some cases, we also visit our manufacturing partners in the far east to test, inspect, and optimise machines in person.

In 2025, our team travelled to China to visit several of the factories we work with. This further strengthened our partnerships and helped ensure our products consistently meet our high standards. Additionally, we also attend tool fairs. Back in March, some of the team visited Cologne in Germany, where they conducted extensive research, tested tools, and held discussions with suppliers.
